If you consider yourself a streetwear enthusiast and have been active on social media in the last year, then there’s no doubt you have heard of Hellstar, the hottest new brand which has seemingly shown up out of nowhere. Founded in 2020 by Sean Holland and his highschool friends Jaden, Dylan and Evan, Hellstar Studios is an upcoming LA-based streetwear fashion brand that expresses symbols and styles that pull from biblical concepts like Heaven and Hell.          They capitalized on having some extra time and funds available to them during the pandemic and decided to start a brand together with only $2,500. Sean, who is the son of a pastor, was always into graphic design, so he took the lead in establishing the look and vision of the brand. From that point on, they tried to put their friends in their clothes, whether they were artists, athletes, or just regular people. They knew if they got their products out in people’s hands, the quality of design and craftsmanship would speak for themselves.      Hellstar Studios Heaven Sounds Tee Cream       The shock value of the name helped gain them some attention and notoriety, but the message behind it is that it can feel at times like we are living in hell on earth and through all the tough times, they’re going to stay bright just like a star shining through the darkness. They found that Christian-based brands are often looked at as being goofy or funny, but they wanted to tell their story without forcing it on people and to have their art speak for itself. Starting out they focused mainly on t-shirts and hats, but have since grown their product offering with varsity jackets, bandanas and their bestselling sweatsuits with flared sweatpants. Inspired by their highschool football days, they have started offering more sportswear as well as organized 7on7 football tournaments for kids ages 10+.           The brand has since become known for using high quality garments mixed with unique washes and over the top designs. They also take inspirations from iconic vintage pieces such as Harley Davidson and The Grateful Dead t-shirt graphics. It has also received many cosigns from important people in the American music and fashion scene such as Young Thug, Metro Boomin, Gunna and G Herbo. They added colour blocks that didn’t go together, in my opinion.   Best shoe of the year: Nike Air Force 1 Low Tiffany & Co. 1837   I believe the Tiffany Air Force One will win shoe of the year because of the hype surrounding this release ever since it first surfaced on the internet. For Tiffany and Nike to do an official collaboration on Nike’s most popular model with the details of the Tiffany swoosh, it goes without saying it’ll be eye-catching."      Shaun:   1. The only reason it was popular was how wild and quickly it was memed. Overall, the shoe looks horrible. You can only wear it once, retailing for about $500.   Best shoe of the year: Jordan 1 Retro Low OG SP Travis Scott Olive   The Travis Scott Jordan 1 Olive is just a perfect shoe, the way the colours play off each other just makes it great for the fall. I didn't like the initial pictures of the shoe, but seeing them in hand made me love them, and in my opinion, it is undoubtedly the best shoe of the year"     Jed:   1. Air Jordan Retro 2 Black Cement   "My least favourite is the Jordan 4 Retro SB Pine Green.   I’m personally really not a fan of reworking old colour blocking such as the Military Blues here. I also disagree with the gum sole, it doesn’t look good with the grey and green. I understand the performance use with the added grip and padding, but I just think it’s unnecessary and just a product of the whole Jordan 4 hype   Best of the year: Nike Air Max 95 SP Corteiz Gutta Green   The 95 is my favourite Air Max Silhouette, and I love the colours of this release. The quality is very premium and detail-oriented, with their logo embroidered on the tongue or the camo sock liner. It feels very thought through. I don’t love the laces, but thankfully, that’s the easiest detail to change"     Matthew:   1. ASICS Gel-Quantum Zientzia Kiko Kostadinov Dark Grey Blue  2. Crocs Classic Clog DreamWorks Shrek    "Least favourite: New Balance 1700 Kith Toronto Pack   Both of the red and white colourways were a massive disappointment, in my opinion. The use of the colours of the Canadian flag was a lazy attempt for a Toronto-themed shoe. If the release of the shoe was timed with the grand opening of the Kith Toronto store, the whole release would’ve been better as a Toronto-exclusive shoe, but they ended up releasing it online to the general public anyway. Kith does online and city-exclusive shoes all the time, and it sucks they didn’t want to do it for the city of Toronto.   Best of the year: Nike Air Max 95 SP Corteiz Gutta Green   The overall hype of Corteiz getting a collaboration with Nike, given their history, was huge. The colour way is clean and wearable, the materials and quality of the shoes are lovely, and the execution isn’t too over the top and doesn’t deviate much from the original silhouette. This release also had great marketing campaigns featuring many celebrities in the commercials, such as Eduardo Camavinga, Phil Foden, Jorja Smith to name a few. They also hosted a crossbar challenge for a free pair, which was a really cool way to promote them. It seems like Nike let Corteiz go all out for the release, but they did us dirty with no shipping to North America."     Anthony:   1. Nike Air Max 95 SP Corteiz Gutta Green 2. Nike SB Dunk Low Born X Raised One Block At A Time 3. Jordan 3 Retro White Cement Reimagined 4. Nike Kobe 4 Protro Mambacita Gigi 5. Nike CPFM Air Flea 2 Cactus Plant Flea Market Faded Spruce   "Least Favourite: MSCHF x Crocs Big Red Boot (Yellow)   It is the most obnoxious and hideous release of the year. I understand the rise in popularity of Crocs and oversized footwear, but no one needed or asked for this boot, and we need to keep that same energy.    Best of the year: Nike Air Max 95 SP Corteiz Gutta Green   I think in the history books, when we look at 2023, the rise of Corteiz from cult following to global stardom will never be forgotten. Their guerrilla marketing and London charm juxtaposed with the super-soaring UK grime scene, birthed a sneaker that is the epitome of being an authentic byproduct of the “ends”.       With the consensus being that either the Corteiz 95s, Tiffany Air Forces or the Travis 1s are the top 3 sneakers of the year, we see Nike dominating the sneakers market throughout 2023. However, it is nice to see a few other names like Adidas, Asics, Crocs and New Balance.        

  Yesterday we got early access to step into the world of Brian Donnely, the artistic visionary known as Kaws, as he unveiled his inaugural exhibition in Canada, Kaws: Family, at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, and you won’t want to miss it.         Best known for his Companion figurines and statues, as well as his infamous X eyes design, the American artist has over 75 items featured, showcasing his career over the last two and a half decades in the world of contemporary art and streetwear.               The event kicked off with a panel wherein Brian spoke about the early days of his career, what inspired his specific style of art, and how he managed to take his career to where it is today.              We then walked through the three large rooms of the exhibition, on display was a wide range of pieces such as Kid Cudi’s Space chain created in collaboration with Ben Baller, a couch made of plush toys from his collaboration with Uniqlo and Sesame Street and various pairs of his Nike x Sacai collaborative Blazer Lows.                There were also many prints on the walls such as sketches from his collaboration with Peanuts, Reese’s Puffs cereal boxes, and earlier works like from his street art on Calvin Klein’s 1997 campaign with Keith Haring.               Some of the more striking pieces had to be the “larger than life” sculptures such as the life sized wooden Companions, various sized vinyl figures, a massive chrome Space Holliday Companion and a newly introduced vinyl family with four characters representing a mother, father and two children.               Mark your calendars as the exhibit opens today, Wednesday September 27th, to AGO members, October 4th to annual pass holders, and to the public October 11th. Digging through Jordan Brand’s archives and unlocking a gem the game didn’t know they needed. Featuring a cracked midsole, Mike’s signature and an unfinished foam collar, the Off-White x Jordan 2 is perfect. This shoe brought back respect and recognition to Jordan’s sophomore shoe with Nike. Since this retro, Jordan 2’s have been in demand and in production with several new colourways releasing every year."   adidas Yeezy Boost 350 Moonrock   "After watching the Yeezy Season 1 show, I witnessed the shoe game shift in favour of Adidas for the first time in a long time. Ye released many notorious models like 950, 750 & 350 V1. Most notably in my opinion, was the birth of the 350 which was made to halt the success of Nike’s Roshe run model. The Moonrock colourway in particular caught my eye as it along with the collection changed the world’s perception of colour towards an earthly, pastel palette." Jordan 6 Retro Champagne   "Michael Jordan won his first NBA Championship wearing Jordan 6’s. In celebration of this feat it is customary to drink champagne and smoke cigars. In 2014 Jordan Brand brought the idea to life with the “Celebration Collection”, where they dressed the Jordan 6 in champagne and cigar colourways with the lacelocks as rings. The Champagne colourway was highly coveted at the time and I tried to line up early for them but they sold out instantly and I ended up with the Cigar version instead. This shoe is very nostalgic to me as it reminds me of a simpler time in the shoe game where you bought shoes to rock not to flex online." Nike Air Force 1 Low A Ma Maniére 'Hand Wash Cold'     "Once images were released of a monochromatic Air Force 1, I was already sold. At the time, I had never heard of the brand A Ma Maniere. As I got more acquainted with the shoe’s premium details and that there were only 5,269 pairs made I was even more sold. The shoe is crafted with a suede wrap around the midsole that I had never seen before. It is dubbed “Hand Wash Cold” because this is the care instructions for delicate, luxurious materials. These shoes speak to my core values as I’m a fan of precise intention without loud execution."     Nike Air Yeezy 1 "Net" Tan   "This shoe deserves all of its flowers and belongs on the Mount Rushmore of sneaker collaborations. Arguably Ye’s best sneaker ever, this first attempt at his own Nike silhouette cemented him as a legitimate genius. Only borrowing the midsole/sole from the Jordan 3, the entire upper is a refined, freestyle sketch by a refined, freestyle Rapper. My favourite details to this shoe is the patent leather strap, “Y” embossed suede mudguard and glow-in-the-dark sole. Don’t let the high-top fool you, this shoe is extremely lightweight and comfortable. Literally, these ingredients make up a perfect recipe for a Bon Appetit collab."   Spider Worldwide, also known as Sp5der or simply Spider has suddenly taken the Internet by storm, gaining popularity among countless artists, athletes and influencers. Many are still curious about the brand’s identity, and more importantly wondering what makes it so popular.      Spider, is a streetwear brand founded by Jeffery Williams, known best by his stage name, Young Thug. The brand gets its name from Thugger’s love for spiders, using spider webs as the focal design on most of their pieces. Another recurring feature in Spider’s design language is the angel number 555, which is often overlaid on top of the spiderwebs and can also be represented in the name, Sp5der.           In an era of fashion where streetwear is reigning supreme, it’s no surprise that Young Thug, who is objectively one of the best dressed and most influential rappers of the last decade, has ventured into creating his own fashion legacy      While there is limited information available about the brand’s beginning, the earliest public appearance we could find of the brand was June 20, 2019 during the 2019 NBA Entry Draft. Bol Bol, a prominent basketball prospect and son of Manute Bol, wore a custom Spider branded suit. The jacket featured hundreds of rhinestones forming into a flashy silver spiderweb, paired with a pair of Off-White MoMA Air Force 1s.      Bol Bol wearing his custom Spider Worldwide suit.      Based on the earliest posts on their Instagram account, Spider’s first public release was through a pop-up held in London, July 4th and 5th 2019. Spider branded denim jackets, sweat suits, hats and pants were available for sale.      In March 2020, the brand collaborated with Gunna, an Atlanta based rapper signed to Young Thug’s YSL record label, to make apparel that would be released alongside his album, Wunna. As of the publishing date of this article, Gunna remains to be the first and only person to have a collaboration with Spider.      Gunna wearing his "Wunna" Spider Worldwide collaboration tracksuit.      In 2021, Thug released his album Punk, and with this, Spider released two punk-themed tracksuits, one black and one pink. The designs feature the work “p*nk” instead of “spider” on the web, which can either be interpreted as pink or punk.     Since then, the brand has amassed a large following and has become the go-to choice for stylish, vibrant and  comfortable sweatsuits.       Jordan Brand and Marvel have announced that they’re gearing up to release another Spider-Man themed Air Jordan 1 on May 20th, leaving both sneakerheads and Marvel fans alike in high anticipation.         Following the commercial success of both “Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse” and the Air Jordan 1 “Origin Story”, both brands have partnered again to further create a unique story and further cement their footholds in mainstream pop culture ahead of the release of the latest animated Spider-Man title, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.     Spider-Man is now portrayed wearing Air Jordans due to Miles Morales’ roots growing up in Brooklyn, which is widely considered to be the birthplace of sneaker culture as we know it. It would then make sense for a kid who grew up in this area to strive to have some classic sneakers on, and what better than the Air Jordan 1.       Taking inspiration from Miles’ signature Spidey-Suit colour way, the collaborative model pays homage to the original Jordan 1 Chicago colourway while using a patchwork design to mimic the animation style used in the film. The end result features over a dozen different patches showcasing different colours, textures, materials, and patterns.    The last time the two cultural icons collaborated, they also chose the Chicago Jordan 1 as the base silhouette, opting to use a translucent outsole and reflective 3M dots to resemble Spider-Man’s web abilities.       We’re eagerly awaiting what’s to come in the future from the ongoing collaboration between Marvel and Jordan brand. Hopefully Spidey won’t be the only superhero to see a signature colourway on an Air Jordan.         

All aboard as we set sail to the Paldea region! The Scarlet and Violet Base Set introduces a whole new generation of Pokemon as well as the return of Pokemon in their Ex forms. Brand new to the ninth generation of Pokemon, Scarlet and Violet introduces the Terastal Phenomenon in fan favourites Arcanine and Gyarados which can be seen in their full art cards. All trainers will be on the search for Koraidon and Miraidon, the new legendary dual type dragons that have arrived from the distant past and future. Not only will we be seeing new Paldean Pokemon but various forms of Pokemon from older generations such as Gardevoir, Kirlia, and Slowpoke just to name a few. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Base Set Booster Bundle          Scarlet and Violet base set will include 258 cards which consists of 198 cards in the main set and 60 secret rare cards. Unfortunately for all of you Charizard hunters out there, our fan favorite Pokemon hasn't arrived just yet but we have some cool chase cards from this set that will definitely catch your attention. We all love opening packs to find the most elusive cards in each set, the chase cards from this new set are shown in the Special illustration rarity, the top four chase cards include the sought after Miriam trainer card, Miraidon ex, Koraidon ex, and Gardevoir ex.          The word going around in the community is that the pull rates have gone up and rarer cards are finding themselves in the hands of trainers everywhere. Our team at Plus will for sure be on the look out for these four cards and other beloved Pokemon in this new set. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Base Set Booster Box         The Pokemon Company International has made large changes to the TCG for this new generation, the first noteworthy change has been the adaptation of silver borders much like their Japanese TCG counterpart. The new borders will now include holofoil edges on select rarities to add an extra flair to each card.               The expansion symbols are now codes within black boxes with white text to help trainers indicate which set the card belongs too. There are some major changes to the symbol indicators with a revamped rarity system indicated below:   Double rare - Two solid black stars   Ultra rare - Two foil stars   illustration rare - One shiny gold stars   Special illustration rare - Two shiny gold stars   Hyper rare - Three shiny gold stars   Other noticeable changes that will be geared towards players in the TCG are the change of layouts on Trainer cards, the subcategories: Item, Supporter, Stadium, and Tool will now be moved to the top left of the cards for visibility in the players hand. As well the Basic energy cards will include the subtype tag for the energy (Ex. Special Energy) and include an extra energy symbol on the bottom right of the card for visibility.     Not only do we see visual changes to the cards, each pack now has one less common slot and has an extra reverse holo inserted into each pack. The most exciting news is that all packs have been upgraded to include three holo cards where before packs may include only one holo. The composition of each pack has changed to reflect these changes:     Previously: 5 Commons, 3 Uncommon's, 1 Energy card, 1 Reverse holo, 1 Rare, 1 Code card.   Current: 4 Commons, 3 Uncommons', 1 Energy card, 2 Reverse holo, 1 Holo rare, 1 Code card Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Base Set Elite Trainer Box - Koraidon        Good news for all trainers and collectors is that we will be seeing the same products as past generations with minor changes affecting the Elite Trainer Boxes. Previously we have seen main sets receive Elite Trainer Boxes that comprised of 8 booster packs, a pack of sleeves, a pack of energy cards, a player's guide, damage counters, dice, condition markers, dividers, and a code card. Special subset Elite Trainer Boxes included 2 extra packs and a promotional card in each box. Jordan 3 Retro A Ma Maniére (W)   My top choice would be the Jordan 3 Retro A Ma Maniére due to Jason Whitener's encouraging and motivational story. It's the first retro Air Jordan to bear the name of his store, as well as the first Jordan his mother has ever bought for him. With its unique colour combination of white, violet ore, and medium grey, as well as design details like the luxurious quilted satin lining and hidden sayings like "All We Have Is Each Other" and "You Have to be Comfortable Walking Alone" on the back of the heel tabs, as well as the wording "Work Harder" on the shoelace eyelets, it is incredibly versatile and neutral. I pair these shoes with a variety of looks. Jordan 14 Retro Aleali May Fortune (W)   This shoe was my second pick because it is another adaptable neutral shoe collaboration with an unexpected pop of colour provided by its jade-inspired features. These shoes should definitely be a part of your spring/summer wardrobe rotation. I admire all of Aleali May's Jordan collaborations because she has a streetwear aesthetic that I look up to. One of Aleali's favourite Jordan silhouettes, the AJ14, has been given a contemporary makeover. It was inspired by Aleali's early childhood memories rooted in her Black and Filipino heritage, as well as, details from her motorbike and jade bracelet that passed from her grandmother. Jordan 1 Mid SE Fearless Melody Ehsani (W)   If you knew what you had was rare, you would never waste it" Melody Ehsani's interpretation of the Air Jordan I Mid as part of the Fearless Pack, with its distinctive colour scheme and design, is unquestionably one of my staff picks. Through this collaboration, she expresses her message of female empowerment and self-expression through the shoe's vibrant multi-color color-blocking leather and standout design elements, such as the hardware watch face with gold accents. Every moment you step, this sneaker makes a statement.   Jordan 3 Retro Neapolitan Dark Mocha (W)   One of my favourite silhouettes is the Jordan 3. This unique colorway is one of my top picks and is known as the Jordan 3 " Neopolitan" because to its resemblance to the well-known Italian ice cream flavour. With its sail sole, which gives it a vintage throwback aesthetic, the recognisable elephant print overlays, and pink contrasting accents, this shoe is ideal to add to any wardrobe. Jordan 4 Retro Black Cat (2020)   The Black Cat Jordan 4 has a timeless design with an all-black colour scheme that extends to the hardware for my final pick. Today is Air Max Day. On this very day, 36 years ago, Nike Released the Air Max They were designed by the iconic Tinker Hatfield to be a performance running shoe. Air Maxes were the first Nike Air shoes to feature a transparent bubble in the midsole, showing off the Air Unit. Air Max Day, celebrated annually on March 26th since 2014, has been a day for sneakerheads to celebrate by wearing their favourite Air Max models. Nike has also used this day as an opportunity to release special projects on retro Air Max silhouettes, but also to release new silhouettes such as the VaporMax in 2017.   Nike will release the Air Max 1 '86 Big Bubble in Sport Red for Air Max Day this year. This model aims to reintroduce the original Air Max 1 silhouette with a larger window, bringing it closer to the OG design. This is a highly anticipated release amongst Air Max enthusiasts hoping to get their hands on the closest thing to an original pair.     In 2018, Nike held a competition where six people across the world, who had submitted their Air Max designs on Nike iD, were chosen to have their designs voted on by the public. The winner’s concept would be released on Air Max Day.   Sean Wotherspoon's Air Max 1/97s were chosen as the winner, and is now one of the most coveted Air Maxes of the last decade. These shoes featured a colourful corduroy Air Max 97 upper and an Air Max 1 midsole and outsole. This collaboration also featured other custom apparel such as socks and hats.    To this day, the Air Max 90 remains the highest selling Air Max of all time, however there are still many other popular silhouettes, such as; The Air Max 1, Air Max 95, Air Max 97, Air Max Plus, Air VaporMax, Air Max 270 and dozens more.    In recent years, there have been numerous notable Collaborative Air Maxes, such as the Skepta Air Max 97s, Off-White Air Max 90s, 97s and Vapormaxes, Undefeated Air Max 97s and the recent Patta Air Max 1s to name a few.         We asked some of our staff, what the Air Max Silhouettes means to them.     Ben, a Manager at our Yorkdale location, is seen wearing the Nike Air Max 1 Travis Scott Cactus Jack Baroque Brown.    What is your favourite pair of Air Max that you own? “The Atmos Air Max 1 Elephant. I have always been a fan of the cement print, but what I loved most was the Tiffany coloured swoosh. When they were released in 2007 and I couldn’t justify paying a premium price for a pair of shoes like that.
